AFP asst. deputy chief of staff Arevalo: PH will survive without VFA

Armed Forces of the Philippines Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff and Spokesperson Brigadier General Edgard Arevalo said that the Philippines will survive without the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA).

In a forum on Wednesday, Arevalo explained that the Philippines survived before the VFA was created and assured that the country will survive after the agreement’s abrogation.

He mentioned that this is the country’s chance to be self-reliant as we have “modest” capabilities.

He added that it is not hard to ask for help to other “like-minded” nations.

As an agency under the Department of National Defense, Arevalo assured that the defense department will protect the public and state the best they can with “modest” capabilities.

Currently, United States Marine Lance Corporal Joseph Scott Pemberton is detained in the country due to the killing of transwoman Jennifer Laude in 2014.

Arevalo said once the VFA is abrogated, lawyers of both parties will face before the court to identify who will take custody on the person involved.
