Senator Cynthia Villar is in favor of giving more budget to the livestock industry as it takes a large chunk of the national agriculture production.
During the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Food, and Agrarian Reform hearing on Monday, Villar said that 33% of the national production goes to the livestock industry.
Citing the Philippine Statistics Authority, she mentioned that the Philippines agriculture sector is not independent since imports occur to sustain demands.
Meanwhile, National Livestock Program Assistant Secretary William Medrano shared that they are provided with P1 billion to support various programs – such as nutrition and development – implemented nationwide through regional offices.
Further, Villar said that she prioritizes the 65-percent backyard farmers as corporate farmers are already educated.
