5.5 quake jolts Leyte, nearby areas

A 5.5 magnitude earthquake hit the province of Leyte and nearby areas that led to aftershocks before dawn, early Monday.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported the quake struck 5:19 a.m., eight kilometers northwest of Capoocan town, Leyte.

The quake of tectonic origin had a depth of 13 kilometers, felt at Intensity 5 in Tacloban City and Pastrana in Leyte; and Intensity 4 in Palo town and Ormoc City in Leyte, Naval in Biliran province, and Borogan City in Eastern Samar.

Phivolcs initially reported that the magnitude of the tremor was 5.7 but was downgraded it to 5.5.
