Senator Panfilo Lacson pushes for more budget allocation for research and development on Wednesday following the local production of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) test kits.
The Food and Drug Administration approved on Tuesday COVID-19 test kits made by University of the Philippines students.
Lacson said that the local scientists have given the country a boost and hope in dealing with the virus, adding that the local test kits will cost less than imported test kits.
The senator mentioned that the recent production of local test kits should be a “wake-up call” for government officials who do not invest in research and development, “but instead are supplier-friendly 'shopaholics' who choose to shop or buy from their 'favorite' supplier.”
Lacson added, “Science entails research. Science can greatly help especially during looming disasters such as COVID-19. It is high time our government throw its support behind our homegrown scientists.”
