Pres. Duterte rejects proposal to lockdown Metro Manila due to COVID-19

President Rodrigo Duterte rejected a proposal to put Metro Manila under lockdown due to the rising confirmed cases of the Coronavirus Disease 2019.

The lockdown was proposed by Congressman Joey Salceda to contain the spread of the virus in the National Capital Region.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said it would be premature to lockdown Metro Manila since there is still no evidence of sustained community transmission of the virus.

Salceda's proposal, if implemented, will bar bus trips, domestic flights, and highway operations – exempting the delivery of food, medicines, and medical services.
