President Rodrigo Duterte announced the suspension of classes in all levels in the National Capital Region from March 10 to 14 as the cases of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) continues to rise in the country.
The president said mayors in Metro Manila clamored for the suspension of classes in his meeting with the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases in Malacañang.
The president stressed the suspension will ensure the health and safety of students and establish a benchmark on the increasing number of COVID-19 cases in the country.
Despite staying home, Education Secretary Leonor Briones stressed students should continue to study their lessons.
President Duterte said the Department of the Interior and Local Government and the Philippine National Police will assign truant officers to ensure students continue to review at home.
In the meantime, the president assured the government has sufficient funds to address the spread of the COVID-19.
The president also said there is no need for suspension of work in government, stressing the government has to function.
